Andrew Mauboussin

Andrew Mauboussin is the Chief Technology Officer of Surge AI, where he has overseen the company’s engineering efforts since its founding.

As the first engineer to join the team, he has spent the past five years building the systems that power Surge’s mission: collecting and delivering high-quality human feedback data at scale. Under his leadership, Surge’s infrastructure has become a backbone for training and aligning large-scale AI models, enabling teams at organizations such as Anthropic and OpenAI to build safer and more capable AI systems. Remarkably, Surge has achieved this without raising external funding—scaling from a small startup into a profitable business generating over $1 billion in revenue.

Prior to Surge, Andrew applied machine learning to high-stakes domains: at Kensho Technologies, he brought advanced ML into finance to improve predictive modeling, and at Twitter, he worked on safeguarding elections by protecting democratic processes at global scale. These roles gave him both technical depth and a strong appreciation for the ethical challenges of deploying machine learning.

Andrew has played a central role in developing scalable human feedback systems with quality-control frameworks that emphasize nuance and context rather than raw quantity alone. This work reflects Surge’s broader vision: ensuring that as AI systems become more powerful, the human feedback shaping them remains rich, reliable, and aligned with human values.

Through his career—from finance to elections to frontier AI—Andrew has consistently worked where machine learning meets society. At Surge AI, that focus now extends to shaping how the next generation of AI learns from people, ensuring that technology grows not just in capability but in alignment with the human intelligence it is meant to serve.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Harvard University.
